People United Against Cuts Holds Rally

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

San Diego – On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, People United Against Cuts, which is a local coalition formed to oppose the Governor’s recent “All Cuts” budget, held a rally and march in front of the Governor’s office to oppose the cuts that will have a tremendous impact on children, seniors, people with disabilities, low income families, college students, and HIV/AIDS patients.

Leaders in our community shared their views on how these cuts will affect the lives of our most vulnerable citizens. Under the current Governor’s proposal, millions of children, seniors and people with disabilities will be deprived of basic health care, home care and other services.

Hundreds of thousands of people will be left unemployed, which in turn will drive up our state’s unemployment rate by more than two percent. This will put pressure on our already revenue-starved state, city and county services, and will harm small business and drive California further into recession.

The Governor’s proposed cuts will deny 300,000 students of a college education, while incresing class size in our public schools. Furthermore, it will weaken the education of our children and make California less competitive with other states. All these cuts will decimate public safety and the public services our communities need to maintain a decent quality of life.

Coalition members want a more balanced approach to solving the state’s budget crisis that includes new revenues and cuts that won’t impact those in need.
