Chula Vista—Chula Vista city employees today rallied in front of Chula Vista City Hall to oppose the essential city service cuts proposed by Chula Vista City Council due to the city’s $20 million budget deficit.
The proposed service cuts would close city pools and recreation centers, close a library, and reduce services such as road maintenance and park maintenance. The cuts would have a negative impact on the Chula Vista community by increasing traffic and road problems, leaving parks full of trash and graffiti, eliminating safe after school programs for children, and creating a magnet for crime.
“The bottom line is that the residents of Chula Vista will suffer because of these cuts,” SEIU Local 221 President Sharon-Frances Moore said. “They threaten the safety and vitality of this city.”
City employees contend that city council needs to closely examine the budget for cost saving measures before cutting any essential city services.
Richard Preuss, President of the Chula Vista (CVEA) Chapter of SEIU Local 221, said employees are committed to working with the city to find an equitable budget solution.
“The Chula Vista Employees Association has historically been a partner with the city to resolve issues,” Preuss said. “The current financial crisis is no different. We will work with the city to find a way to ensure the needed services residents deserve continue.”
