COPE Donation

Recently, SEIU donated to the re-election campaigns of Congress Members Bob Filner (CA-51st) and Susan Davis (CA-53rd).  These donations were made possible by the voluntary contributions SEIU members made to the Committee on Political Education (COPE), which is a fund to help elect pro-worker candidates.

Congress Members Filner and Davis have been strong supporters of SEIU issues.  While in office, they have supported a variety of issues impacting our members. They have helped SEIU organize Head Start workers, voted to re-authorize the Head Start program, worked on improving nurse staff ratios, voted for the Employee Free Choice Act and voted to fully fund the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which is called Healthy Families in San Diego County. In addition, they have worked to improve mental health coverage and voted to raise the national minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour.

Congress Members Filner and Davis voted to stop U.S. President George Bush’s proposed federal budget cuts that would have severely cut health care services for the disadvantaged.

“SEIU has always been there for me,” U.S. Representative Bob Filner said during the COPE donation presentation from SEIU Local 221 members Kathy Griffee and Carmen Duron.

By pooling our voluntary contributions into COPE, SEIU members are as powerful, and at times, even more politically powerful than special interest groups.  If you would like to find out how you can donate to COPE or do more to help elect pro-working people to public office, please click here.
