County Bargaining E-Blasts!

Keep up to date on County Bargaining with E-Blasts!

6.14.11

We are proud to announce the launch of a new website to let the community know what the real priorities of San Diego County government are; perks, bonuses, and car allowances for management; pay cuts, more work, and fewer benefits for us! That’s not fair!

The new website features personal stories about our members who repair county roads, protect foster children from child abuse, keep the county’s long-term care facility operating, find housing for poor San Diegans and other vital functions.

The website will be promoted through banner ads on the websites of the San Diego Union-Tribune, North County Times, San Diego Reader, Voice of San Diego and other news, blog and information sites.

Log onto the website to email or call the Board of Supervisors and tell them that we just want what’s fair! Tell them to cut the fat, not the front lines!

Important News About Your Paycheck!

The county wants to FORCE you to take these pay cuts!!!

So what's at stake for the average county worker?

·       At least $252 a month in a 7% pay cut

          and

  • $80 a month for bilingual premium
  • $174.45 a month for hospital outstation premium
  • $36 a month for locked facility premium
  • $140 a month for inmate supervision premium
  • $100 a month for the Masters of Social Work premium

It is outrageous that they want us to take these cuts while top managers continue to pay less for health care, receive performance bonuses, and get car allowances!

It's time to show up and

TAKE A STAND!

Come the the Contract Action Team (CAT) meeting tomorrow to get an update on bargaining and JOIN THE FIGHT!

Today in bargaining...

Negotiations really heated up as the County offered us another counter-proposal which looks very much like the first one!
  • Same 7% pay cut.
  • Same elimination of most premiums.
  • Same elimination of all step increases.

Once again, they failed to explain to us why managers continue to receive performance bonuses, car allowances, and long-term disability coverage while we get NONE of these.

Also, the County still did not address why they get more life insurance and more money for health care than we do.

It’s time to take a stand and fight for what is fair!

Join us at the June 4th

5.25.11

Today members across the county walked up to their supervisors or managers and asked them to stand behind them. We make a difference in the work that we do and it is unacceptable that management and the Board of Supervisors are getting raises and better benefits while we, who serve the public, are asked to sacrifice.

We asked managers to sign a simple pledge and say that our lives and our families are just as important as theirs! We asked managers to tell the Board of Supervisors it's time to do what is right.

A few managers stood behind their employees and signed the pledge, however, most did not!

It's time for us to take a stand for what is fair. Come to the Justice for Working Families Rally on June 4th to let the county know that we will stand up and fight for a fair contract.

Did you know San Diego County’s top management pay LESS for their health care, get more vacation, have better life insurance policies, and get more benefits than we do?
  • Management gets up to $100 more a month for their health care than we do!
  • Management gets long term disability insurance…we get NONE!
  • Management’s life insurance policy covers them up to $150,000 versus our $10,000 plan!
  • Management gets 2 more vacation days than we do every year!

They’re taking care of themselves while at the same time they’re asking us to make unacceptable concessions!  The proposals the County has given to us could mean we would lose hundreds of dollars each month that we need to support our families.

Yesterday, we gave the County our economic proposals that would simply make us equal with what the County gives their top management and the Board of Supervisors.  We also gave them proposals that would give us more protections against layoffs and contracting out.

We gave the County a simple message yesterday:   WE WANT WHAT YOU HAVE.  Our lives are just as important as theirs and our families need health insurance just as much as theirs do.  We’re only asking for what’s fair.

We have come up with a PLAN TO WIN that will expose these inequalities and make sure we win a fair contract, but we need your help and support!  Come to our next CAT meeting to hear our plan and find out what you can do to win!  The meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 17th at the local (4004 Kearny Mesa Rd.)

Now is the Time to Get Involved!

5.7.11

This week in bargaining, the County gave us counter proposals to our language proposals. Our proposals would strengthen our contracts by improving communication, increasing access to work sites and would cost the County NOTHING.  Still, in almost every case, the County said NO!

This is on top of their proposals that would already cut at least 7% out of our pay, plus the loss of all step increases and many premiums! Can you afford to lose hundreds of dollars a month??  The County thinks you can!

Next week, the bargaining team will begin visiting worksites to give an update on what’s been happening and negotiations and talk about our PLAN TO WIN!  Contact your Worksite Organizer at 858-560-0151 to find out the schedule.

Do you think your hard work is as valuable as management’s?  The County doesn’t!!  Come to the next CAT meeting, Tuesday May 10th at 6 p.m. at the local (4004 Kearny Mesa Rd., San Diego 92111) to find out why!

You can also show your support by participating in Purple Thursdays.  Members across the county are wearing purple every Thursday to demonstrate their support of our Bargaining Team.  You can check out pictures of Purple Thursdays on our Facebook page.  (www.facebook.com/seiu221).

4.30.11

Last week in bargaining the County presented us with their economic proposals.  Their proposals- to freeze all step increases, remove their 7% contribution to our retirement, and eliminate most premiums- would mean we would lose hundreds of dollars out of our paycheck every month!

On Wednesday, we asked the County to explain their reasoning for each of their far-reaching proposals.  They say “times are tough” and it’s these tough economic times that require them to ask us to give up hundreds of dollars of our pay.  While it’s true many cities and counties across the state have struggled over the past couple of years to balance their budgets, San Diego County is not one of them.  In fact, a report released by the Center on Policy Initiatives on Tuesday found that the County has an annual surplus of $2.2 billion- one of the biggest in the state!

What will these proposals mean to us?  Look at these examples:

A Protective Social Worker with 20 years of service will lose $436 a month!

A Certified Nurses Assistant with 5 years of service will lose $270 a month!

A Clerk in the Treasurer/Tax Collectors Office with 11 years of service will lose $253 a month!

For a county with an annual surplus more than half its annual budget, these proposals are outrageous!  Can you afford to receive less in your paycheck every month?  The County thinks you can!

On Thursday, we gave the County our non-economic proposals which are designed to strengthen union rights and equalize our language across bargaining units.  The County spent most of the day discussing our proposals in caucus and responding to information we requested.

In unity,

The County Bargaining Team

Members are encouraged to watch negotiations and show unity and solidarity to the Bargaining Team.  The schedule for bargaining this week is:

4.21.11

On Tuesday, your bargaining team sat down with the County to begin negotiating our next contract.  Thank you to all the members who came out to support us for our “Breakfast with the Bargaining Team” rally and those who escorted us in and stayed to watch the negotiations!  You can check out the pictures on our Facebook page...www.facebook.com/seiu221.org)

We spent the first day fighting for our rights as union members to observe the negotiations.   Your bargaining team stood strong and held the line on the right for our members to observe bargaining in the face of opposition.  “Today we saw the power of collective action”, Martha Rodriguez, bargaining team member for the Social Welfare unit said, “Our bargaining team fought for democracy”.

Yesterday, the county presented us with their economic proposals.  The county is proposing to Freeze all salary steps, Remove the 7% offset employees receive towards their pension, and Eliminate many premiums.  In other words, the County is asking us to work for FREE!

We Want To Hear From You!!

What do you think about these proposals?  Come to our next CAT meeting on Tuesday, April 26 at 6 p.m. at the local, 4004 Kearny Mesa Rd., San Diego, CA 92111.   We’ll talk about how we respond to the county and win a fair contract.

There will also be an informational meeting on Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in North County at the San Marcos Senior Center.   Please contact Sun Strait at 858-560-0151 or sun.strait@seiu221.orgwith questions.
