Unite to Win

2000--Delegates to SEIU convention endorse a New Strength Unity Plan to increase strength by uniting locals by geography, employer and industry. Plan implemented in Illinois, Florida, Mass., Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Washington, New York, Michigan and Missouri.

2004—SEIU Convention delegates recommit to realignment of locals.

2005—In California, healthcare SEIU Locals 250 and 399 merge to form UHW with 140,000 members.

Feb 2006—Nine hearings throughout CA with 140,000 pages of testimony.

June 11, 2006—Hearing Officers report adopted by SEIU executive board. SEIU executive board calls for a vote by all affected members to approve the consolidation of 20 public sector and non-profit/private unions into four regional SEIU Locals.

Summer 2006—Town hall meetings around California to discuss Hearing Officers Report and the ‘Unite To Win’ vote.

October 6, 2006—‘Unite To Win’ Votes Counted: 88% Yes!

January 2007—Andy Stern charters four regional locals-- SEIU Local 1021 in northern region, SEIU Local 521 in central northern region, SEIU Local 721 central southern region and SEIU Local 221 in southern region.
