Happy holidays – we can be proud of what we accomplished together this year

Holiday_PurpleOrnaments

Together, we won some great victories this year and defended the voices of working families. This is especially notable in a year in which billionaire special interests brought Janus vs. AFCSME before the Supreme Court to try to sabotage the power of working families. We stood together and their plan backfired with many unions actually gaining membership after their attack.

A few other highlights include:

  • Members like you who are part of the Member Political Organizer Committee walked and called to elect strong voices for working families in November. Measure D also won and moves the final vote for county offices to November when the most people vote.
  • Candidates we supported won, including Supervisor-Elect Nathan Fletcher. On Jan. 7, Fletcher will be sworn in at the Board of Supervisors. If you want to attend the meeting, RSVP by clicking here. Dr. Jen Campbell and Monica Montgomery will sit on the San Diego City Council as advocates for working families. In North County, we gave Mike Levin the support he needed to Flip the 49th. We also supported many other pro-working family candidates in North County, including Catherine Blakespear, Tasha Boerner Horvath, Barbara Hamilton, Priya Bhat-Patel and Jody Hubbard
  • On Jan. 1, 2019, the State of California’s minimum wage will increase to $12 an hour. SEIU led statewide efforts to fight for this increase, members spoke out and we organized the Raise the Wage San Diego coalition. When the minimum wage increases to $12 an hour, this will raise the wage-floor for everyone and create upward pressure on wages.
  • On Jan. 4, 2019, County employees’ wages will increase by 3 percent. If, after January, you do not see these increases reflected in your pay, please contact your work site organizer or the SEIU Local 221 Advocacy Center at (858) 268-7020.

Our unity and fighting spirit will move us forward in the new year when we will face many challenges including the County of San Diego’s need to invest in staffing as illustrated by this state audit. Sign this petition to tell the county to do the right thing before we are hit by the next crisis.

Thank you for standing strong. I hope the holidays provide you and your family a restful time to reflect and prepare for the challenges ahead. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy holiday and a great new year!

In solidarity and happy holidays,

David Garcias
President, SEIU Local 221
