“Next year we will grow bigger and stronger. We’ll be building more strength for our 2017 county contract fight by growing our membership. We’ll be getting ready for the 2016 election by increasing our COPE contributions. We’ll continue to put people first by fighting for fair contracts and quality services in all of our jurisdictions. We will continue to support fast food worker organizing and working with communities across San Diego.” David Garcias, President, SEIU Local 221

On Saturday, December 6th, SEIU Local 221 hosted our annual member holiday party. The evening was filled with dinner, dancing and drawings!

The evening had many opportunities for members to win fabulous prizes just in time for the holiday season. Thanks to the many gifts donated by our generous donors, members (and their children!) had the chance to win gift certificates, games, and more. The grand raffle prize was the custom built SEIU Local 221 grill donated by Attorney Michael Rott and built by the Ironworkers that went to HHSA worker Bonnie Trimuel!

We also held a COPE drawing, where members had the opportunity to win $300 (1st prize) or $200 (2nd prize). Sergei Senoff, with the City of  Chula Vista, won 2nd place and Graham Russel-Cruz, of Lemon Grove FRC, took home 1st prize!

Congratulations to all the winners!

Several elected officials and special guests also attended the celebration. National City, City Council member and SEIU Local 221 member Mona Rios was there with her father. Imperial Beach City Council member Ed Spriggs was there with his wife. San Diego Unified School District trustee Kevin Beiser was in attendance with his partner. Newly elected Poway Unified School District trustee Michelle O’Conner Ratcliff joined with fellow trustee Kimberley Beatty. SDCERA board member Samantha Begovich came with her family. Lastly, Sarah Boot, who announced she is running in 2016 for Assembly District 78, stopped by.

We were also joined by Council President Todd Gloria. Who gave a brief speech to members about the important work we are all doing to #RaiseUpSD. We are grateful for his leadership and his continued support for working families. In particular, our fight to raise the minimum wage and guaranteed earned sick days for all San Diegans.

NHA Contract Negotiations Update and Meeting!

At our last session, Management has given us a response on a number of proposals and YOUR INPUT IS CRITICAL!

Management has withdrawn their healthcare proposal and has proposed paying all increases to your healthcare in the next year.

Management has also offered to sign agreements on certain economic proposals including bilingual pay and vacation in exchange for our agreement on Wages.

The Bargaining Team wants your opinion on these proposals!

Happy Holidays from SEIU Local 221!

2014 has been a powerful year for our union.

Our members fought and won strong contracts throughout the county in Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, Fallbrook, Grossmont, and Calexico. We have been standing up for retirement security at SDCERA, our county pension fund.  Together we collected over 1,000 petition signatures and testified three times before the SDCERA board to protect the retirement security of ALL county employees. We are proud to welcome the San Diego Red Cross blood technicians and we look forward to beginning negotiations for a strong contract in 2015.

We are continuing to build bridges within our communities through strategic partnerships and increased activism.   We have fought to raise the minimum wage in the city of San Diego, and we are looking forward to a victory at the ballot box in June of 2016.  We have been tireless supporting fast food worker in their fight to win raises and form a union.  We know that as union members we need to continue to fight for all working families and stand up for injustice everywhere.

Our stewards program continues to grow and showcase excellent leadership and development. 2014 saw Local 221 members standing strong against unfair disciplines and wrongful terminations. The Advocacy Center and Stewards have handled over 600 cases on behalf of our members. Of the approximately 500 cases closed, our Union has either won, settled or resolved almost 300 of those cases.

Next year we will grow bigger and stronger. We’ll be building more strength for our 2017 county contract fight by growing our membership.  We’ll be getting ready for the 2016 election by increasing our COPE contributions.  We’ll continue to put people first by fighting for fair contracts and quality services in all of our jurisdictions.   We will continue to support fast food worker organizing and working with communities across San Diego.

From our family to yours, we wish you a happy holiday and a great new year!
